I hear it all the time. Texas has constitutional carry now, so technically you can carry a handgun without a license. And yes, that’s true. But like I was always taught, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. So skipping your LTC may not be the smartest move.
At BTO, we’ve seen a noticeable drop in people signing up for LTC classes, and honestly, that concerns me. Not because the license is required, but because there is still a lot of value in getting it.
Let’s talk about why the Texas License to Carry still matters and why I believe it’s one of the best things you can do if you carry a handgun in this state.
You Will Actually Learn the Law
So what does the LTC cover? The LTC course covers the legal side of carrying in Texas in a way most people never take the time to learn on their own. You’ll walk away understanding signage, where you can carry, where you cannot, and how use of force actually works under Texas law.
This part matters more than ever. A lot of people assume that if someone is “doing something bad,” deadly force is automatically justified. That is not how the law works. Knowing when you can and cannot legally use your firearm is critical.
You Can Carry in More Places
Even with constitutional carry, there are locations in Texas where you cannot legally carry unless you have an LTC. Certain businesses with specific signage and some campus carry areas fall into this category. Having your license gives you more flexibility and fewer legal headaches.
Your License Travels With You
Your Texas LTC is recognized in 37 other states. Constitutional carry does not cross state lines, but your Texas license does. If you ever travel outside of Texas and plan to carry your handgun, the LTC makes that possible in many states.
You Skip the NICS Delay
When you have a current LTC, you can bypass the NICS background check when purchasing a firearm from an FFL. Present your license, complete the paperwork, and move on. It is a small thing, but anyone who has been delayed knows how valuable that can be.
Confidence Is Worth It
Our LTC classes are not about checking a box. You leave with a solid understanding of the law, clearer expectations, and more confidence in how you carry. That peace of mind matters.
Not Getting Your LTC? You Still Need Training.
The LTC course does not teach you how to run a handgun. You are expected to show up with a basic level of proficiency, and passing the shooting qualification should never be your only goal.
Even if you choose not to get your LTC, please do not skip training. Carrying a firearm is a serious responsibility. Safe handling, accuracy, decision making, and legal knowledge are essential whether you hold a license or not.
We offer private instruction, beginner friendly classes, and skill building sessions for every experience level. Training is not just for “gun people.” It is for anyone who wants to be safe and competent.
What to Expect at BTO Range
We keep things simple, clear, and practical. Our LTC class runs about four to 5 hours and covers Texas law, firearm safety, use of force, and real world considerations. You’ll complete a written test and a 50 round shooting qualification.
If you are nervous, do not be. We walk you through the process step by step.
Need a little preparation beforehand? We offer private instruction and LTC prep sessions to help you feel confident going into class.
Ready to Get It Done?
We would love to have you in class. Whether you are new to carrying or you have been doing this for years, the Texas LTC is still absolutely worth it.
